You can’t beat an intimate picnic for romance. A romantic picnic needs some planning, but it is worth it. Not only will you have a lovely meal together, you will also have time completely alone. These tips will help make your Valentine’s Day picnic perfect.

Most important of all, of course, is the food. A picnic should be elegant and simple. Try including a selection of sausages, pates, and sliced meats. Bring some good cheese, like Brie or Camembert, and several types of fruit. Throw in a fresh baked French bread baguette and some imported mustards. You might also like to make a trip to your local deli for some prepared salads and side dishes. Make your picnic special by including a bottle of wine or champagne and include some bottled water and soda or juice. For dessert, bring a box of fine chocolates. The key is to include foods that are simple, but out of the ordinary.

Into your picnic basket, load your goodies and drinks. Be sure to include napkins, plastic plates, a bread knife, a spreader, salt and pepper, and a wine opener. You can even purchase plastic champagne glasses. To make your picnic extra special, bring along a few large candles, some matches, a portable CD player with appropriate music, and some fresh flowers. And don’t forget the blanket!

Don’t let the fact that Valentine’s Day falls in winter deter you either. If the weather is inclement or simply too cold for an outdoor picnic, move it inside. Enjoy your picnic in front of a fireplace or simply on the floor of your living room. You can continue your romantic time by renting a romantic movie and enjoying it after your picnic. Enjoy this time with your loved one and show them how much you care.

Your houseplants can bring a welcome reminder of summer into your home; but they need special care during winter months to remain healthy and vibrant. Lower humidity and reduced sunlight can cause houseplants to suffer if not given proper care. Houseplants also grow more slowly during winter months, and thus need their feeding and watering schedules adjusted.

There is a tendency to overwater houseplants during winter months. After all, the air is dryer, so they must need more water, right? Well, actually, excess water can fill in the air spaces within the soil, resulting in the roots receiving less air than they need. Instead of watering on a schedule, water to the touch. If the soil is dry an inch deep, it’s time to water. Water just until some water flows out of the drain holes on the bottom. After a few moments, empty out the drainage saucer so that your plant does not sit in excess water. To combat excessive dryness in the air, use a room humidifier or simply mist your plants occasionally.

Fertilization is still a good idea for your houseplants, but it should be reduced in the winter. Apply one-fourth to one-half the recommended amount of fertilizer when it is time to feed your plants.

Since daylight is scarce during winter months, you may consider moving your plants to a sunnier location, such as a south- or east-facing window. Keep your plants away from drafts near doors or air from heating ducts. With these few changes in your plant care routine, you can ensure that your home is filled with foliage all winter long.
